What exactly is the “Brown Like Me” Books site about?
The site contains my personal reviews of books that my children and I have read with “brown like me” characters in them. Some of the books I read to my kids and others I didn’t feel were appropriate for my kids. But, that is the beauty of it. These are book reviews and I will give you my honest opinion about what I/we thought!
How did the site get started?
Well, here’s the story. Due to my husband’s job, we lived in a small, predominately white town. In search of a babysitter, I befriended a number of college girls at our church in hopes of finding a match for our family! Peering out of the window to see the new babysitter walk up, my daughter squealed with excitement and belted out, “Hey mommy, she’s brown like me!”
At that point I realized that although I had no control over the diversity of our town, I could control the diversity found in our picture books. Honestly, I had not really thought too much about how important it was for my daughter to see and read books about kids/characters who looked like her.
However, her actions clearly let me know that it was important and from that point I decided that I needed to be proactive about selecting quality books for my kids that featured characters who are “brown like me.” Hence, the “Brown Like Me” Books site was born!
