Ada Twist, Scientist: Exploring Flight!
Written by Andrea Beaty & Dr. Theanne Griffith
Illustrated by David Roberts
This book is a must-read for young minds curious about the concept of flight. In fact, it’s filled with so much information that I, as an adult, even found it intriguing. Not only is it filled with scientific material and vocabulary such as thrust, space flight, lift, force, airfoil, drag, and torque, but it also addresses curious questions that kids may wonder about. Why can’t I fly like a bird? Can all birds fly? (HINT: No, penguins swim and kiwis only walk).
I also learned more about black aviators such as Katherine Johnson, Bessie Coleman, Willa Brown, Patrice Washington, Mae Jemison, Marcella Hayes NG, Angela Williams, Vernice Armour, and Captain Joyce Beckwith.
The book discusses all kinds of flight: kites, birds, planes, rockets, bees, hummingbirds, helicopters, hot-air balloons, and even spiders. There are even simple flight-related science experiments to try at home! Read more >>
