A Sweet Smell of Roses ~ Angela Johnson

A Sweet Smell of Roses

Written by Angela Johnson
Illustrated by Eric Velasquez

This book is about two young girls who sneak out of their house to march with Dr. King for freedom. As they run out the house they smell the sweet scent of roses. When they return to their worried mother, who has been anxiously awaiting their return, the girls tell her all about the march and again there is the sweet, sweet smell of roses.

This book is inspired by the countless young people who took a stand and participated in the Civil Rights Movement. This is a great book to teach children about this important moment in history from a child’s point-of-view. Read more >>
