Based on the life of Lewis Henri Michaux and his bookstore, the National Memorial African Bookstore, which was located in Harlem Square just down the street from the infamous Apollo Theater, this book clearly emphasizes the importance of reading books and acquiring knowledge. A clever poet, Mr. Michaux befriended and “educated” many who entered his bookstore, including Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X.
I was most intrigued by the biographical information and the author’s note which provided even more insight into Mr. Michaux and his bookstore! Michaux believed in the power of words and the need for books, so much so, that he started his bookstore with only five books and a mission. He had the book itch and the book closes encouraging readers to believe in something so much that they, too, have the itch to make it happen, just like Michaux. Read more >>
