I, Matthew Henson
Written by Carole Boston Weatherford
Illustrated by Eric Velasquez
This is a picture biography of North Pole explorer, Matthew Henson. The book tells the story of Henson, from working as an orphaned cabin boy to planting the American flag at the North Pole along side four Eskimos and Admiral Robert Peary. For young readers, I do think it’s important to note that the book does mention Henson and Peary having to eat their dog team on one of their Arctic expeditions in order to brave the frozen wilderness. It also mentions the Eskimo legend of Kokoyah, the Devil of the North that guards the ice cap. Read more >>
