Mumbet was a slave for Colonel Ashley in Massachusetts. The Colonel’s wife, Mrs. Ashley, constantly mistreated Mumbet. Overhearing the Colonel discuss Americans being free from British rule, Mumbet decides she wants to be free as well. With the help of Attorney Theodore Sedgwick, Mumbet goes to court and eventually gains her freedom. She goes on to work for the Sedgwick family. This true story is told thanks to Mr. Segwick’s daughter. I enjoyed reading this book and was especially intrigued by the author’s notes about Mumbet at the end of the book.
