The Story of Ruby Bridges
Written by Robert Coles
Illustrated by George Ford
This book describes the courage, fortitude and compassion of the first black child to attend an all white elementary school in New Orleans. The 6 year old, Ruby Bridges, was escorted to school by federal marshals as she faced angry protestors who opposed the idea of integrated schools. What the angry protestors didn’t realize was that this young girl prayed for them daily, in spite of their hurtful words and angry faces. This speaks to the compassion of the young Ruby, loving your enemy and praying for those who persecute you. Still determined to learn, Ruby sat in a classroom alone with her teacher day after day without complaint. I belive there is much we, as adults, can learn from young Ruby! Read more >>
